Modem – Meaning, Definition, Types, Function, and Explanation

Hello friends, in this post, you will know what is Modem. In the previous post, we told you about the RAM (Random Access Memory) and Types of RAM.

In this post, we will tell you what is Modem. I hope Friends will like you all our posts, and we hope you liked our posts like this.

The modem is very important in the field of computer. The modem was first big and was out of the computer but now it is small. In this post, we will give you all the information about What is modem. You will also know about the Types and Functions of Modems.

There are many devices on the computer, among them Modem is a device that is used by computers for some different functions. The modem is required to get the convenience of the Internet, you have a lot more about Modem. We will also know about Modem and Its Types information today.

Let’s now understand it in Detail, if you want to get all the information about Modem, then read our post “what is Modem” from start to finish.

What is Modem?

A modem is a network hardware device that allows a computer to send and receive data on a telephone line or cable or satellite connection. So that digital data can be converted into Analog signals used on the phone line.

Meaning of Modem:

Modem word is made up of two words. Modem This word is made from MOdulator and DEModulator.

Basics of modulation and demodulation:

A modem connects our computer to a standard phone line or cable so that we can send data or get data.

A modem is a conversion tool that can reuse the signal of a device to another device, to convert it to such a signal.

For example, the modem converts the digital data of a computer into an Analog signal that can be sent through a telephone line.

The modulator part of the modem converts digital signals into Analog signals, and the demodulator part converts digital signals into Analog signals.

Modem Functions

There are many functions of Modem, but we will tell you about some of Modem’s most important tasks, what Modem works –

Modulator fixes Digital Signal from the computer and the rest of the Digital Device, Modem’s work is modulating the Analog Signal coming from our Telephone Line and changing it to a Digital Signal that is easily understood by our Computer Read Found

Demodulate incoming signal from the computer can be converted to Analog Signal and can be sent again and this process is called Modulation and Demodulation.

The modem is mostly used in Network Area, Modem acts as a means of communication between different networks or LANs and a different world.

A modem connects our computer to a standard phone line or cable so that we can send data or receive data.

A modem is a Conversation tool that converts a Device’s Signal to another device that converts into a Signal.

Types of Modem

You understand the functions of Modem, now we will tell you the type of modem:

  1. Broadband Modem

Broadband Modem is known as High-Speed Modem. It used for DSL or Cable Internet Access uses Advance Signalling Technique to achieve High Speed compared to some Broadband Routers Hardware Integrated Modem is included.

  1. Dial-up Modem

Dial-up Modem is required to make full use of the Local Telephone Line. Which means that you can either run the Internet or Voice Call at a time.

Data Convert between Dial-Up Network, Traditional Modem, Analog Form used on Telephone Lines, and Digital Form used on Computer.

  1. Removable Modem

Removable Modem is used with the old Laptop PCMCIA slot and can be added or removed as per the need.

  1. On-board Modem

On-board Modem is a Modem built on the motherboard. This Modem cannot be removed but can be disabled through a Jumper or CMOS Setup.

Internal Modem is inside the computer. It is a modem that is embedded in the Desktop and Laptop, Internal Modem uses the power of Computer. Such as the mobile in which we use the Internet, Internal Modem is used.

What is External Modem

An external modem is connected to Serial or USB Port built-in computer, such as Modem which is required to be installed from the computer system separately, requires a separate Power Supply and is connected to a cable in Computer, called External Modem.

History of Modems:

The first device, called Modem, converts digital data to transmission on Analog telephone lines. The speeds of these modems were historically measured in the name of Bond (named after Emile Baudot), although it was converted into bits in seconds even after computer technology was developed.

The first commercial modem supported the speeds of 110 bps and the U.S. It was used by the Department of Defence, News Service, and some major businesses.

Modem gradually became acquainted with users from the end of the ’80s as the Public Message Board. After this, news service like CompuServe created the initial Internet infrastructure.

Then, with the explosion of the World Wide Web in the mid and late 1990s, dial-up modems emerged as the primary form of Internet access in many homes around the world.

The first modem was “dial-up”, which meant that they had to dial a phone number to connect to the ISP. These modems operate on standard Analog phone lines and use the frequency of telephone calls whose maximum data transfer rate was limited to 56 Kbps.

Dial-up modems require full use of the local telephone line. Which means that you can either run the internet or make voice calls at a time.

Modern modems are usually DSL or cable modems, which are considered “broadband” devices. DSL modems operate on standard telephone lines but use a wide frequency range. This gives more data transfer rates than the dial-up modem. Cable modems send and receive data on standard television lines, which are usually coaxial cable.

Most modern cable supports the DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification). Which provides an effective way to transmit TVs, cable internet and digital phone signals on the same cable line.
